Nokia N86 8MP, Analysis (First Part)

A new Nseries in scene is always a time of particular importance in the world of mobile telephony, and for this reason we will try to give to the Nokia N86 8MP required coverage on our page and thus stay with an opinion more formed of what offers us the leading company in the market.

For us not beat about the Bush, we declare as paragraph star Terminal your particular camera, and although it seems that at this stage of the year with 8 mega pixel phone no surprise, we find the first phone with variable opening (which translates into a better sensitivity to light) and great lens angle signed by Carl Zeiss. But photographic topics we discussed in depth later.

I’ve decided to divide analysis into two parts, to be able to go ahead some points, and be able to spend more time to others who so require, in this first I will try to focus on the design and construction of the terminal, in addition to its photographic facets.

Nokia N86, a Nseries

The first thing that draws the attention of the Nokia N86 its particular structure, it is in the same line of the Nokia N95 y N85, We have a phone with two sliding keyboard above and below the screen, and as in the case of siblings used mechanism is quite gotten. In any of their three possible positions the phone is easy to use.

In the event that occupies us the terminal looks in an elegant black colour, although it is also available in an interesting white in the style of the Nokia N97. With his older brother share design, simple and minimalist lines, especially when it is closed.

I like the finish that has the front of the terminal, the entire surface of glass topped with a piece of metal, much quality in this sense, in the back we comply with a plastic lid.

One aspect that seems not to matter much to Nokia in this type of Terminal is the weight, the phone is not exactly a light device, in the scale pays 149 grams and has a fairly large volume (103.4 × 51.4 × 16.5 mm), but we also appreciate the space that require different mechanisms of keyboards, a higher-quality camera, and solid making construction using good materials (similar to a Nokia N97).

The Nokia N86 8MP features a display of 2.6 inches, QVGA (240 × 320 pixels) resolution and 16 million colors, new Nokia turns to technology AMOLED for its preparation, which improves the autonomy of the machine and gets a very vibrant colors which make the vision in bright light conditions is really good.

The display also incorporates a special surface anti scratches and a light sensor to adapt to circumstances, at his side appears already frequent camera for video calls. Being demanding it seemed interesting that screen was of higher resolution, since competition is a factor that has most worked.

Highlight the new active element called Nokia kickstand, a stand that incorporates the area back to rest mobile as we see in the image, by default when it opens the Gallery of images, but it is possible to configure it, in my case I have the watch, and I’m giving enough use.

We have to speak positively of the keyboard, that element already almost forgotten in this segment, at first sight mobile keys seem small, but it is fairly easy to operate them, something more delicate are those devoted to multimedia, closer to the edges of the phone, but nothing worrisome. The directional pad is ergonomic and soon will be our best partner of navigation.

Around the phone we find the buttons to turn on the phone, a successful microUSB, missing a standard 3.5 mm jack connector, stereo speakers, a blocker of the mechanism of sliding, volume control and the controversial firing of the camera button.

Main specifications

It’s time that we know a little more of its features, and therefore started counting which is a terminal with support to GSM networks (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), UMTS (900/1900/2100 MHz), and HSDPA 3.6 Mbps.

Do not know when the Lords of Nokia will retire this operating system as we know it, at least with this boring interface full of menus, specifically speak of Symbian OS 9.3 (3rd edition FP2), which for everyone be familiar, but that seems to me that a facelift for a terminal of these features need you.

It has an internal memory of 8 GB, expandable using cards microSD up to the amount of 16GB. The same layout is not as comfortable as other terminals of the competition, since it is hidden behind the back cover as we can see in the image below:

Hardware issues, the Nokia N86 uses the platform ARM 11-434 Mhz, features of 128 MB RAM, We have enough for daily use, but that if we play much with the display of videos and images of quality, as there are times that happens it really badly, will see a strange situation, since the service NGAGE moves it beautifully, optimization issues perhaps.

Connectivity has not been neglected, since the terminal is well served, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (A2DP), cited and future standard microUSB, also has receiver GPS (A-GPS) which shall serve the Ovi Maps. Not I forget to comment that it has TV output.

But their skills do not end here, outfitted with accelerometer for auto screen rotation, the foot active for the display of content without having to endure the phone, FM radio with transmitter, and a digital compass. In short, very full.

Camera, the differentiator

We come to the most interesting section of the terminal, its photographic capabilities, we already know that specifications in the photography world does not lead anywhere, only the real-world examples can help determine how much interesting can become a device for us, since too many are the elements that determine the quality of an image, regardless of megapixels.

Although it is always positive recall featuring an 8-megapixel sensor (and larger), as well as being the first Nokia phone with variable aperture, and something seems to me very interesting, the wide-angle signed by Carl Zeiss, 28mm Tessar, and I am sure that the Germans not sign with its name if there is some minimum quality present.

This type of lens gives the images a perspective somewhat different to what we are accustomed in this scene, with greater coverage of the scene. It is true that it is not ideal for all intakes, since sometimes the elements in the scene will remain in a smaller size than usual, forcing us to find the ideal position. Digital zoom is 20 x, and macro mode have a minimum distance of 10 cm to work.

Other features of the set are its third-generation dual-LED flash (seems that Nokia forgot Xenon), and of course the camera focus features automatic, that along with the mechanical shutter (Sony Ericsson K800 already took him) give a plus when making the shots.

Sincerely me it did not like the implementation of the trigger, has two positions, a first intermediate in which the camera focuses, and a second pressing down to make the decision, but the reality is that it is so hard that we tend to cause problems of stabilization in the socket, leaving many of our blurry photos.

One of the advantages of the system is the variable opening (2.4-4.8/4.6), who had already presented in his day the Motorola ZN5, with it we can adapt to the scene with a greater sensitivity to light, unfortunately Nokia does not give us the chance to play with these values, and is the camera which automatically adjusts the number f.

The camera features an interface similar to vista in previous models like the N85 or N95, load quickly when we make a decision, about 3 seconds since the top of the camera, we act we see a video of its operation:

I guess that everything can be improved with successive firmware, but if I ask something from here, is to seize the number of buttons available to the terminal to make shortcuts to the different features, many or not do anything, or do the same.

Focus is also relatively fast, if we find ourselves in good light it takes more or less a second, if not so focused on something more than two seconds. Save the highest resolution photography is about 3 seconds.

Another common facet with other mobile is the panoramic mode, in this case it is especially achieved with a 28 mm lens, and in only 3 shots we can already get a pretty convincing outcome. The phone will automatically detect the direction in which we are making the panoramic.

We found many characteristics common to other mobiles in their category, such as the ability to geotag images and videos, in this case the GPS takes approximately one minute to provide location data.

As negative detail at the level of specifications, since I personally don’t miss it, is the lack of recognition of faces or smiles, a few algorithms present in most terminals of the competition.

I leave an example obtained with the method of continuous shooting, in which the quality is still acceptable in a way in which there are 6 images continuously: [[gallery: kotecinho]]

If I liked especially what mode that lets you create scenes-lapse, they programmed intervals which are going to take the photos and phone will only making the shots, the result if you dedicate a time you can compile it in a pretty funny video, then I leave an example courtesy of karismafilms:

I’ll try to summarize my conclusions in terms of quality depending on the different situations in which we find ourselves, but with a common denominator, samples of this type of cameras are subject to strong algorithms to reduce noise, it is there where is makes much difference between different models on the market:

  • In photographs taken outdoors with good light conditions, the phone behaves in the middle of its most direct competitors, personally the results of Nokia in terms of colors and contrast, I like more if to this we add his unique perspective we get more usable results, some example:

[[gallery: kotecinho]] [[gallery: kotecinho]]

  • If we go to Interior, or artificial light situations, logically the low quality, but the colours continue to be compelling and when necessary the dual LED flash does very well their work, and in this sense may only have a phone above, Sony Ericsson C905. [[gallery: 06]]
  • Where can do little with this or any other terminal, or even compact cameras is in low light situations, photos taken at night, for example, the small size of the sensors can do wonders and the results tend to be mediocre, with much noise and lack of detail, but being realistic in our case are slightly above average, even coming to meet decent: [[gallery: kotecinho]]

Found me very interesting this comparison performed by the boys of Nokia Conversations, with the Nokia N82 in low light conditions, draw your own conclusions:

We had left neglected section of video capture, so we are going to do this, we are faced with another facet that notably resolves the terminal, capturing videos to a VGA resolution (640 × 480 pixels) to 30 frames per second, with sound. It has been rare to any video modes at high speed as its Korean competition.

[[gallery: 06]]

I like the sharpness and colors is achieved in the recordings, both elements are on the horizon, and the fact that the lens is wide angle gives you a touch different from the videos. Get a known comparison, recording is superior to that of a N95 or a N93, even to the recent Nokia N97.

The chosen format is the MPEG-4, and we can choose that white balance is automatic or manual, also we can select a night mode or different color effects. If we needed light, dual LED flash can act as light support.

Finally, after making lots of videos and pictures, need us a gallery to rise to the occasion, and which we find in the Nokia N86 is the same as we see in other terminals Nokia, as the N97 or Nokia 5630 XpressMusic recently analyzed.

In it we find different ways to filter the content by date, album, or categories. When it comes to show the content appear us small preview in a carousel rotating (as you can see in the last image of the analysis), also have the option of making a slideshow of them.

As I said previously, I have had serious problems when I displayed videos of considerable size, or zoom on large images, the funny thing is that the phenomenon is random, sometimes I can do it with greater fluidity, don’t know to answer the problem, but it seemed to me just comment it.

First conclusions

Up to here the first part of this analysis that I hope that it has helped to better understand the terminal, or at least the outcome of interest, sack as early conclusions that a photographic section has significantly resolved, on par in quality as my favorite in these conflicts, the Samsung Innov8 and slightly below that Sony Ericsson C905 Interior photos , but with a wide-angle that out of direct competition.

I’d especially recommend the phone to people that you like to share your pictures on the net, since if something does well the terminal it is to compress 8 mega pixel images to files always near the mega, Super quality.

Excess remember that this terminal is not only a camera, but that we have a very well built terminal, for my uncomfortable volume, which is surrounded by almost all features that are demanded today in a phone of its category, this hope soon, in the second part of the analysis, to be able to give you know other sections of this popular terminal.
