LG KM900 Arena, Analysis

I guess that you already know to the LG KM900 Arena by the number of times they repeat the announcement on television, we could say that regardless of its quality and the expectations that we have put into it, it perfectly represents the new wave of phones who want to be like the nameless terminal of Apple, and I have no doubt that it’s one of the coolest phones of this season reasons are not missing you.

Presented last February in the MWC in Barcelona, the phone caused a big media impact and first impressions were quite positive, its main attraction was the premiere of a user interface S-Class 3D, considerable fluidity, original design and an apparent ease of use.

We start the analysis with the idea that the LG Arena a phone is exceptionally well equipped with almost all the features that are demanded in the market, a powerful hardware, 3 G connectivity (HSDPA), Wi-Fi, GPS, transmitter and receiver FM, in addition to a generous 8 GB internal memory, but know him from outside:

Design, construction and display

The first thing that draws attention to meeting him physically, is the small size presenting for a phone that has with 3 inch screen, its weight, which does not exceed 105 grams also helps to create this feeling. The exact dimensions are 105.9 × 55.3 × 12 mm, smaller than his brother LG Renoir, or to an iPhone.

For tastes, colors, but in the event we are concerned I do not think that anyone dislike the design of the LG KM900 Arena, simple lines (not overly original), it has a metal frame that surrounds the screen on the front, which gives it an elegant touch. Comment that some European operators will get a dark grey version on sale metallic (Titan Black), which by now we have no record that appears on the Spanish market.

The back is easier if it were possible, made with material like aluminum. In general I like the quality of its construction, the materials used and their design, which revolves around the main character, touch screen.

A touch screen capacitive type with 3 inch and 16 million colors, performed with TFT technology, which provides a high quality of image, high levels of brightness and contrast, and resolution of 800 × 480 pixels (WVGA), with a density of pixels greater than phones that boast of this, such as the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X 1.

With these specifications there is more to say that the screen looks great, but the option I prefer in some ways OLED chosen by Samsung, that had the opportunity to try on the S8300 recently analyzed, since the LG screen is complicated enough to see the light of day, an evil that is present in almost all the terminals LG.

The response of the screen is pretty good, recognizes the movements with light touches, so the sensitivity of it has left me quite satisfied, comment, that the technology employed may not be a stylus on it.

Other elements in the front of the phone are the camera’s video at the top, and the three sensitive function buttons under the screen touch. The central is a direct access to the cube UI and on each side the typical functions of call and hang up.

We are still reviewing the terminal, and we are on your left side we have a USB port, properly covered with a sliding cover, but unfortunately it’s a proprietary solution for LG.

At the top we have a useful 3.5 mm jack connector, the power key, and a button to open the back cover. While on the right we have the volume keys and camera. Incidentally all a fairly content size, too much for my taste.

We get to the part back from the Arena, it found a Chamber of 5 megapixel camera with optical Schneider-Kreuznach lens and LED flash, which I’ll talk about later. One negative detail is that they have not agreed to the design of a protective cover lens.

Before opening the lid that covers the battery, say that the terminal has a second microphone for recording sound in video catches. Once inside we find a 1000 mAh battery, and the card slot microSD (up to 32GB, exchangeable without turning off the appliance).

The battery is not one of the strong points of the terminal, but sincerely hard more than I expected, taking into account the size of the screen, and giving it a use quite full, you can reach us to last a couple of days.

According to manufacturer their autonomy is 300 hours standby time, 30 hours playing music and 4 hours in conversation. If it is interesting to remember that the battery is removable.

S-Class 3D, an interface to the height

With a display of excellent response and hardware at the same time, the Korean company have a basis to be able to present a user interface to the height, perhaps the most important feature in a phone in our days.

The interface is composed of 4 different desktops: widgets, shortcuts and media contacts. As we can see in the video that accompanies the analysis, move between them is quite simple with simple gestural movements or the Center key that gives us access to what could be described as “ bin ”, a three-dimensional image in which each face is one of the desktops.

Firstly, we have the screen of shortcuts, that it appears to us initially empty, and in it we can place up to nine icons, really have found you little use to this first desktop, taking into account that the main menu is made excellently, giving us access to all the mobile options.

The next screen allows you to populate it with widgets, small floating applications on the desktop, which include an analog clock, a calendar, world time, weather, radio FM, or one calculator, among others. If we don’t have enough space we can use the vertical scroll of the screen to place or view more widgets.

Interesting notification widget that appears at the top, which also serves as a shortcut to the calls, messages or emails.

The third side of the cube could define it as a shortcut to our main contacts, they are shown in a carousel of images, in a beautiful 3D and optimized for texture be rotated. For those who don’t want to flourish so, also it is possible to visualize these contacts in a more traditional way.

Finally we have the desktop multimedia, similar in concept to the contacts, but with two carousels, one for music and one for images. Such as contacts, everything flows smoothly with a decent three-dimensional effect.

Once reviewed 4 desktops I’d tell that under the same we have 4 main menu options, among which we highlight the last which gives us access to the main menu with all the possible options in the mobile, and as I said before when rotating the phone presents us all items on screen at once, once familiar access to them is very fast.

The LG Arena an administrator has multi-tasking, using a menu we can change to another active application either close them that do not interest us. Access this Manager is let down the central button.

Multitasking is limited, only two applications can run at the same time, and when we talk about Java applications, we have trouble living together with others, for example with a Java application in the background not we can connect the radio.

Comment we have another menu in the top bar, where we find ourselves signals battery, coverage, etc, if we click on it (is the only way to access this menu) have access to different features of fast, such as activate the WiFi or Bluetooth connectivity, change profiles or view quotes pending.

Remarkable results as phone

The capabilities of the LG Arena as phone are remarkable, the levels of reception, quality of the same and the speaker itself are above average, a paragraph that already seems secondary to some and to which LG has given importance.

Once past this point to note, we ask ourselves if the main agenda options, calls and messaging management are optimized to its fully touch interface, and am able to assert that once adapted to the screen, the options are made easily, as much as they could do on an iPhone.

To write we have two possibilities on screen, use the alphanumeric keyboard, or rotate the screen and use the QWERTY keyboard. Our beats in both cases respond without delay, but in the case of the full keyboard the size of the keys could have been greater.

I liked the easy to configure e-mail, at least in my case with the Gmail account, we also have support for protocols them POP3 and IMAP4. Management is fairly comprehensive, once downloaded we can search through emails, sort them, or filter by any criteria.

A less interesting detail is that the attachments have a cap of 1MB, a restriction which makes us to limit the quality or duration of our photos or videos, for example.

For my taste the calendar and contact management is great, optimized for touch use, attractive design, contacts appear along with a picture and a call button. We can access from this more information and features about contact.

The possibilities of connection of the Arena are excellent, we have a terminal quad-band GSM / GPRS (HSDPA 7.2 Mbps), also have WiFi and Bluetooth (2.1 with stereo A2DP) connectivity.

The terminal uses the same connector to charge the battery, USB, or as output of television, in particular I like the possibility of using the phone as a unit of storage via this connector, as both accessing the phone’s memory to the microSD card.

Camera, very discreet

We have spoken already on many occasions mobile envelope and cameras, and the famous race of megapixels, in this case LG has decided to stand in 5, an amount that on paper looks like enough to accompany the new terminal.

Optics is signed by Schneider-Kreuznach, and the choice for flash has been the LED technology, that altogether it fail to remove too-good results.

The quality of images displayed on the terminal screen look great, but once transported to the computer see more noise than the appeared on phones with similar sensors.

The used interface is new, fully touch as it is logical, can configure typical values and as you can see in the second video which accompanies the publication is very attractive.

The LG KM900 Arena It is capable of capturing video with a resolution of 720 × 480 pixels at 30 fps format 3GP (MP4 codec), they sound is recorded by a microphone on the back, and the quality is pretty decent, though perhaps not so much as you would expect, an example below:

Displays top quality 3gp-zip (1.81 Mb)

There are two modes of recording, Slow Motion for resolution 120 fps and QVGA , and another at a higher rate, in both cases the quality is decent, the sound disappeared into them, examples of these two modes:

It shows quick 3gp-zip (469 Kb)

It shows slow 3gp-zip (639 Kb)

This section of recording I prefer its competitor Samsung S8300 UltraTouch, that without selling both their specifications, get results from my point of view in all modes. Below is a gallery with the Arena:

Multimedia, a section star

On the basis that the LG Arena comes with 8GB of internal memory and that also is expandable via microSD slot, we have an ideal platform to convey information.

To facilitate the facets multimedia, the phone features a standard 3.5 jack connector mm, listening via Bluetooth sound in stereo. As you can see in the pictures the phone is certified Dolby Mobile.

The media files are accessible from the menu in itself or from one of the faces of the cube, the first have access to the files itself (in folder structure), while in the second are us our files selected in a 3D carousel. I liked that files in main memory and microSD do not appear together to sail on them.

To view images and video the LG Arena It features two modes depending on the orientation of the phone. In vertical mode, are neatly by date, type or name, while in landscape mode are displayed in perfect 3D the main file and the previous/next on each side.

We have the option of marking files with a star, which will be appearing on the face of the cube. Once you choose an image you can zoom on it’s way to multi-touch.

In regards to music, also have access from the pail in a quick but basic way (again the carousel), either from the menu, we have the complete player, which will be shown depending on the orientation of the phone.

Another aspect to highlight is the FM radio transmitter/receiver, This has RDS (two lines of information), and we also have a widget onto the cube.

Another quite achieved capacity, is video playback, in part thanks to the generous screen size and resolution (800 × 480 pixels), it can play files in format DivX / XviD, both vertically and rotated screen, the phone will automatically detect your position. Not I forget to comment that it has TV output.

The Arena has integration to YouTube, and we can upload videos from the terminal, but it is curious that we do via WiFi, but through our connection with the operator, an incomprehensible detail.

Web browser

It is not an element that stands out above other terminals, indeed I would say that the browser is just decent, despite having multitouch possibilities that make it eye-catching (but less fluid than an iPhone), the loading speed is slow.

The browser works according to the orientation we give to the phone and the only way to put it to full screen is in landscape mode, so if I think it is a negative detail is that Flash support is not available.

If I’d like to point out that in the history pages visited, are saving for viewing offline, interesting also that while browsing we can do searches for words.

Honestly, I preferred to install Opera Mini, find me it more comfortable to work with him, despite not having a full-screen mode.

Conclusions

LG It has complied with the progress necessary to put the sand in the foreground in the world of mobile telephony, at least meets my expectations in relation to the interface and multimedia, especially if we use as reference the Apple iPhone issues.

Ultimately we have a pleasant to use, terminal which include its multi-touch screen, a considerable internal memory (expandable microSD), a quite complete connectivity (WiFi, GPS…), to which we add a decent camera or details as the certification Dolby Mobile.

It seems as if they had developed the Arena taking as a reference the iPhone and adding just what in this missing, but it is a pity that before such a deployment LG has not tried copying to the terminal of Apple in the most interesting, its applications store, since if time not remedy it, compared to the competition, we will be in a fairly closed system.

If you’re interested, you have more information about its availability in different operators on our page.

I’d like to thank from here to my colleague Paolo and his band Champagne by the issues that have given me for the realisation of the videorecorders. We finished the analysis with a higher quality images:
